I do not which is the best, but you should consult the list of
officially supported Linux host operating systems:

I'm using VMWare Workstation 4 on Red Hat 7.3/8.0 and Mandrake Linux
9.1/9.2 without any problem. From a pen-test point of view I would
recommend Mandrake 9.2 (it's new, RedHat-compatible and full of tools)
though it is not officially supported.
