I like Debian for this purpose as it provides a very minimal
installation which I personally find easy to understand.
In addition to this there is a vast, vast, collection of packages
which are available for download with minimal effort.
I manage this by having two linux chroots, one with Debian stable
and one with Debian unstable just in case I need a choice of versions.
I suspect that any answer you receive will come down to personal
preference and religion though ;)
