Hello Al,
I'm a very seldom poster but frequent reader of many of the
securityfocus' lists. As such I have to tell you that I'm very concerned
about your email regarding postings about products.
> 1. If you want to post about a product positive or negative you
> cannot do so from a Huhsmail or other such account.
Please consider that there might be several good reasons to use such an
account. The most important one is that you reveal valuable information
about your company's network with some postings (e.g. "we have firewall
xy, version a.b.c running and don't get it upgraded because...").
A second reason would be avoiding to get spammed on the company's
account. Web archives are known to be resources for spammers, too. That
is no criticism of you or your company, that is a fact that noone can
avoid and we have to live with it.
> 2. If you plan to post use your real name or do not post.
This is the same argument as above, regarding the first point of
revealing information.
> 3. Be polite period.
That's ok. But sometimes it is very difficult to stay polite if a
product has driven you crazy the last days. :-)
> 4. Do not use this as a forum to take shots at your competitor or I
> will see you and your company banned from every list we have here
> (except Bugtraq).
I'm no native english speaker, so I may not understand "take shots"
completely. But don't underestimate your readers. Most of them don't
have any problem to differenciate between answers like "the product
sucks" or "that product will solve all your problems" and justified
criticism.
So I appeal to you to not force your first two rules. The loss of
valuable information if using these rules strictly is to high.
Don't let moderation become censorship.
Of course I'm aware that I don't have any right to tell you how you have
to run your mailing lists. But as an user of those lists I want you to
know my doubts regarding newly introduced "ground rules".
Thank you for your time.
