Yeah. You need the key. (I assume you are attacking the algorithm not
a specific instance)

The algorithm is the wrong attack here. I am unaware of any weakness
in AES that would allow someone to crack it in a relatively quick
manner (and by that I mean within your lifetime). You will have more
luck trying to get the key, do a sidechannel analysis or compromise
the original system and snag the plain text (assuming it still
exists).

If you are looking to compromise a crypto system using AES, you have
to go after the weakest link in the implementation. The end user. Or
a weakness in the system implementing AES (perhaps the coders were
sloppy and cache the key in the clear in memory). But as far as
trying to brute force AES, you are out of luck. Especially with that
large of a keyspace.
