This is usually useful for client-side attacks. Once an attack is able to
execute code on a end user system (ie. a desktop pc) it may be desired to
create a command & control channel with an external system. If all outbound
communications from the end user system to the Internet must go through a
proxy the complications to establish that outbound channel are increased.
At the last Black Hat Federal, Max Caceres did a presentation on client-side
penetration testing and elaborated on some of the technicalities of an
actual software implementation to do it.
